Marketing Myopia From the dawn of time marketing has had major effects on influencing people to buy into something. In biblical terms Adam and Eve were the first to fall victim of the marketing campaign of the snake in the Garden of Eden. The snake was able to persuade them that the apple would bring them a better life and knowledge. Companies used marketing to persuade customers to buy their products or utilized their services. There are thousands, if not millions of companies in the world today that are competing for the same customers. Each company does some type of marketing, but for the truly successful companies marketing is one of the key pillars. For example, railroad companies in their prime only focused on transporting goods such as wood, oil, mail and steal. The railroads never focused or rarely focused on the passengers. If railroads did not have tunnel vision they would have understood that they were not just bulk goods Transportation Company but a travel agency for passengers to travel to locations in record times. Imagine if Norfolk Southern Railway in their prime focused on the passengers and thought long term they could have expanded into airline. If railroads companies would have done what Philip Morris did when he purchased Miller Brewing, and brought in airline executives to run the ailing railroads at the time.
