The marketing career I chose to research is a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). Chief Marketing Officer’s are top-level executives similar to Chief Financial Officers and Chief Operating Officers. They perform several different tasks that increase product sales and improve brand image or marketing campaigns. They work alongside sales, marketing, and development departments to ensure effective marketing strategies are being executed in all of the company’s divisions. To help their teams they assist them in developing sales objectives, marketing policies, and customer relations programs. Marketing requires effective and creative communication, so that is why the position of a CMO is not strictly limited to marketing majors only. To get to this high of a level you also must have extensive professional experience to prepare you for the responsibilities that Chief Marketing Officer’s have. Additionally, just like many other career fields, a bachelor’s degree is the new high school diploma. To set you apart from the crowd completing a master’s degree is highly encouraged. For example, a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) is a great option as it further instills management theories, strategies, and skills that can be of the upmost value in the business world. In addition to diplomas and experience it is also vital for a CMO to have topnotch communication skills as they are constantly interacting with board members, managers, employees, and even clients at times. It is essential for them to present their ideas and strategies effectively and have a general understanding of economics, accounting, and finance. They must be able to collect, interpret, and analyze data as market research is an important aspect of their job. Lastly, just like any other Chief Officer or manager, Chief Marketing Officer’s need to be strong leaders with the ability to problem-solve and motivate the employees under them.
