Self Discovery is the process of finding oneself and discovering an individual's strength and weaknesses. The journey to Self Discovery is one of the hardest journeys in life. The novel I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak, shows the theme by showing how the main character has evolved over the journey of Self Discovery. In the beginning, the main character Ed Kennedy is perceived as someone who has "No real career. No respect in the community. Nothing" (Zusak, 15). In Markus' other book The Book Thief, one of the topics is Self Discovery. Markus Zusak argues that the journey to Self Discovery is one of the most difficult journeys in life. This is successfully portrayed by his use of detail, his writing techniques, and how his perspective is about the main character. Someone robs the bank and Ed ends up stopping him and becomes a hero. He anonymously receives an Ace of Diamonds in the mail with three addresses and times on it. He has three jobs to complete, the first one being to kill a man who rapes his wife. Next, to comfort an old widowed lady, and the last one, to help a runner become more confident in what she does. During the time Ed is completing these tasks, his friends notice a change in him because he starts to build his life and becomes happier. Ed begins to believe that he is the messenger and gets four other playing cards following his completion of the tasks on the first card. The next card being the Ace of Clubs, then the Ace of Spades, Ace of Hearts and finally the Joker.
