About Lafayette and his time in America (rough draft)- The Marquis de Lafayette was an orphan boy who strived to be like his father, and was one of the greatest major generals in the American Revolution and in France. Lafayette was born on September 6, 1757 in France at the Château de Chavaniac. He was born into a wealthy family, and also an ancient family of french warriors. His full name is Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch- Gilbert du Montier de Lafayette. When Lafayette was only two years old his father died while fighting in the Seven Years War at the Battle of Miden in 1759. In 1768 his mother moved to Paris leaving Lafayette in the care of his Grandmother , and in 1770 his mother passed away. The death of his father sent Lafayette's first …show more content…

When he was back in France, he helped to start the French Revolution in 1789. He had served in the National Assembly and on August 27th 1789 he co-authored the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the citizen. During this time he gave the key to the Bastille to George Washington on behalf of the people of France. When the French Revolution turn violent, Lafayette fled but was then imprisoned at Olmütz by the Austrians. He was finally set free, but most of his relatives died on the guillotine. He settled down at La Grange, which was near Paris, and it was nicknamed the Mount Vernon of France. Lafayette later named his newly born son Georgies Washington de Lafayette and honor of George Washington and he named his youngest daughter, suggested by Thomas Jefferson, Marie Antoinette Virginia in honor of the French Queen and the state of …show more content…
