What is marriage? The dictionary defines marriage as the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship. The bible defines marriage as a covenant, a sacred bond between a man and a woman and instituted by and publicly entered into before God. People get married for many different reasons. A few of these reasons include emotional, economic, cultural, and religious reasons. Everyone has emotional needs. Most people feel that they need someone in their life to fulfill that emotional void. In “The Story of An Hour” Mrs. Mallard first wept then felt a sense of freedom when she found out her husband died. She also knew she had many things to look forward to since she believed her husband was dead. That alone showed that although she felt love toward him she felt no emotional tie with him. Many marriages are religious based on family traditions. If you have grown up saying grace before each meal as a child, when you become an adult that tradition will stay with you just as any other tradition that is common in your family. If religion is not involved then marriage would ultimately be based on love and the value of the relationship and not about religious rules. For some people marriage may seem easier without the pressure of trying to satisfy their religion. The most unstable marriages are those between two people from different religions in which conflict arises. The most stable marriages are between two people who are not very religious. In today’s time there has been a decline in religious marriages because of the social pressure that comes along with it. With the decline in religious marriages and the social pressures that come along with it, there has been a satisfying increase in the importance of the decision about who to marry based on emotional needs and not the convenience of trying to satisfy religious
