In the novel Pride and Prejudice by famed British author Jane Austen, two marriage proposals to a young woman named Elizabeth Bennett were made by two men whose names were Mr. Collins and Mr. Darcy. In this essay we will be analyzing and scrutinizing these two proposals to see just which one was superior, if either were. To set the stage, Mr. Collins is a clergyman in the house of his mistress, Lady Catherine du Bois. He is a boyish and immature man, though devout in his service to God and his mistress. Mr. Darcy is the richest man in all of England other than the king. Mr. Bingly is his good friend who is wealthy in his own respects and talks sense into Mr. Darcy to propose to Lizzy. Collins was a complete buffoon. Though he was a very pious man, he wanted only what was good for himself when he extended his offer of marriage. He said, “It is only fitting for a man of my religious standing to have a proper wife and for a woman of your age to have a proper husband.
