Marshall Bruce Mathers III, also know as Eminem, was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri (“Eminem”). He is currently an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Marshall’s mother, Debbie Mathers, was only fifteen years old when she was giving birth to him. She had nearly about died during his 73-hour birth (Baker and Ahmed). If his mother had died, there wouldn’t have been an Eminem, and hip-hop would change drastically.
Marshall, no matter what state he was placed in at the time, lived a life full of poverty, mental and physical abuse, and drug use by his mom and other people. Not too long after this, Eminem released “The Slim Shady LP” in early 1999. In a short period of time, the album had already managed to go multi-platinum, and made its way onto to many charts and records (Dawkins 463-485). At this point, Eminem had blown up, and almost everyone knew who he was. After Marshall’s mom heard the things he said about her on this album, she tried to sue Marshall for $10 million. She managed to get $25,000 out of it, but it all settled down to $1,600. The album following “The Slime Shady LP,” was “The Marshall Mathers LP.” This album was a huge hit when it was released, and managed to sell 1.76 million copies its first week. The album would later go on to be certified 9x platinum in March 2004 (Dawkins 463-485). After a while, Scott Silver, the writer for the movie, wanted to produce a film depicting Eminem’s life when he lived in Detroit. For the longest time, nobody could figure out what to call the film, and Eminem brought up, “8 Mile.” On the set is where Eminem wrote, in one take, the soundtrack for the movie, titled “Lose Yourself” (Baker and Ahmed) (Eminem 119).
