When a parent expects the most from their child, it shows they care and truly want the best for them, yet they can have negative effects as well. Crying in H Mart, by Michelle Zauner, tells a story of tough love between a mother and daughter: A mother with high standards, and a daughter who struggles to meet them. Most importantly, I will listen to their opinions and aim to improve my parenting methods as I go. Chongmi made the mistake of not being open to change, continuing to follow the same rules and standards that were passed down from her own mother. Effective and successful parenting is defined by the ability to overcome and adapt to your mistakes, and at the same time, do everything you can to set your child up for future success. From Crying in H Mart, I have learned what not to do when it comes to parenting. Michelle turned out to be very successful, yet one can assume her future could have gone in many different ways. Zauner’s mother truly wanted the best for her, dedicating her life to trying to make her perfect. Yet, perfection will always be unattainable, and that is something Chongmi could have better understood. There is nothing wrong with wanting the best from someone, yet it can become damaging when those standards are not met, just as we observed in Crying at H Mart. In the end, our parents shape us into who we are, and we appreciate all the support and affection they attempt to give
