People Change Over Time ★As we grow we realize that people change. You look back and see how different one person was a while ago and how much we realize that they have changed. People don’t just change on the outside, they also change on the inside in terms of how they think. Both Marta Salinas and Cynthia Rylants show two different yet important lessons in life. In Marta Salinas’s story, “The Scholarship Jacket” the main character Martha wants to win a jacket based off of her grades. It takes her a second to realize that she has to stand up for herself because she knows that she earned it. Eventually she realizes that she won’t get it if she does nothing, and ends up standing up for herself. However in Cynthia Rylant's short story, “Shells” the main character Michaels parents died in a car crash. He ends up moving in with his aunt Esther. She thinks that Michael hates her. Eventually both Michael and Aunt Eshter realize that they don’t hate each other and eventually find something to bond over to have a better relationship. She uses Martha's problems to show when you don’t give up, good things happen “ I looked at him, forcing my eyes to stay dry. "He said if I had to pay for it, then it wouldn't be a scholarship jacket….” "Okay, damn it. We'll make an exception in your case. I'll tell the Board, you'll get your jacket." I could hardly believe it. I spoke in a trembling rush. "Oh, thank you sir!" Suddenly I felt great.
