If You Have Faith, You will Have Everything
Life isn’t always what it seems because at the end of every day and the beginning of every morning you have no idea what might happen, which in turn is why someone should never give up and always have faith. The very essence of faith is uncertainty. Mark Watney, a fictional character in Andy Weir’s novel The Martian can be viewed as a fundamental existentialist based on his experiences on Mars. His situation looks absolutely hopeless, but Watney doesn’t stop working and always be optimistic. Even though the communications antenna broken, and he has no way of letting NASA know that he has survived, he still recording the logs everyday. From the beginning to the end, Watney never say give up.

Maybe after a near death experience, common people will give up what they insist on, but Mark is unique compared to others. He chooses to ignore the failures.“To them, equipment failure is terrifying. To me, it’s “Tuesday”.”( Weir 152) In this quote, it is talking about equipment failure when an important piece of equipment fails to work it can cast a person’s life. Mark, he is common for this to happen to him and accepts this, he views it like a typical day which inevitable will happen. Even in this situation, Watney still keep recording his daily logs and sometimes, he will say some dirty jokes to remind him that he is an alive person and he will be rescued sooner. “Watney: Look! (Weir 129) The reasoning behind this response is that Watney has already knew the whole world will see what he typed on the screen, so he is trying to through these funny moments to tell the public that he is fine. With his background with botany, he is happy he is capable of doing this(use his own poops to cultivate potatoes). “My asshole is doing as much to keep me alive as my brain.” (Weir 14) In this quote, he explains how everything he is doing and the limited resources he has are important.
