Martin Luther King Jr. was a key leader in the civil rights movement, and is well known for his Alabama bus boycott as well as many other nonviolent forms of demonstration against segregation. He wrote “Letter from Birmingham Jail” from his jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama after being arrested for peaceful protesting, in 1963. This letter is a response to “Statement by Alabama Clergymen,” in which various members of the clergy criticized King’s efforts to take a stand against discrimination. Throughout paragraphs 13 and 14, King uses metaphors, antitheses, as well as a somber tone in order to appeal to pathos, to argue for the priority needed to change segregation laws.
In April 1963 Martin Luther King was arrested and jailed in Birmingham, Alabama, for organizing demonstrations against unjust segregation laws. While in jail, he read a letter written by eight clergymen who denounced his demonstrations. King answered the clergymen in a letter now known as "Letters from Birmingham Jail." A study of American history reveals that King was justified in leading demonstrations against unjust segregation (Jim Crow) laws. To begin, in April 12, 1966 several Alabama Clergymen wrote an open letter to Martin Luther King criticizing his actions during his demonstration in Birmingham, Alabama.
Dr Martin Luther King decided to write a letter form jail because he was arrested for fighting for his and many others rights in Birmingham Alabama. The letter expresses the frustration that Martin Luther King has with the clergymen. Martin Luther King states, “I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. ”(king). Dr. King then went on to say it is his responsibility to attack injustice because he believes all communities are unified as one.
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” he is addressing the Clergymen, more specifically the white church and its leadership who criticized his efforts in the civil rights movement, by calling his demonstrations unwise and untimely. He is also simultaneously addressing the national audience as well in letting them know of the injustices of the time. It was 1963, and Martin Luther King Jr. wrote this letter from inside a jail cell. He had been arrested during an anti-segregation march for not having a valid parading permit in Birmingham, Alabama. In this letter he addresses the criticisms that were brought forth to him.
In his “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” Martin Luther King Jr. addresses his fight for civil rights as an activist leader. After being arrested and imprisoned by Birmingham police during a non-violent protest against segregation, King wrote this letter. He used his letter to respond to a public statement made by eight white clergymen, who degraded King's use of peaceful protest. He used this opportunity to develop his credibility as a famous civil rights activist & illustrate the need for change. He utilized many methods and analogies to help the public grasp his viewpoints.
He explained why the protesters were civilly infringing racist laws and city ordinances; why the protesters had truth and justice; and how he was thwarted with the clergyman and white moderates in the South who said they supported his cause. In his “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, Dr. King incorporates biblical and historical allusions to give him credibility with his target audience, the clergymen. Additionally, Dr. King subtly asks rhetorical questions and makes logical conclusions to force his audience to consider his strategy of nonviolent resistance to cease racism and oppression. Throughout his piece, Dr. King uses many strong connections to biblical theologians and philosophers that strengthen his appeal and credibility.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a letter while in jail addressing clergymen for several criticisms. The clergymen, agreed that social injustices existed but argued that the fight against racial segregation should be fought in the courts, not the streets. He refers the demonstrators as “outsiders” and calls it untimely requesting the Negro community to withdraw support from the demonstration, and urges the local community and law enforcement to continue to show restraint against them while protecting their city from any unwanted violence. Dr. King responded as an African American father, a minister, and activist. He defended his rights to be there in an upfront, impassive tone.
Response to “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr. In Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, he responded to statements written in a Birmingham newspaper that criticized his actions in the city. He undermined these disapprovals by explaining his belief in nonviolent direct action. King also went on to give opinions on other topics, such as, the lack of support from white moderates and white churches. He used technique and structure to develop his ideas and justify his methods.
I believe that paragraphs 9 and 12 from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” are the strongest paragraphs in this letter of his. These paragraph is so profound and truly explain why segregation is unjust in two short paragraphs. They don’t go into a lot of detail on why segregation is unjust, because they don’t need to. They’re argument is strong enough with how short they are. Since these paragraphs give an easy to understand and short reasoning as to why segregation is unjust, explains what makes a law just or unjust, and show that just laws can be unjust when applied to situations such as segregation, I believe they are the strongest paragraphs in this letter.

Letter from Birmingham Jail Martin Luther King Jr. once wrote a letter referring Birmingham, Alabama as “Bombingham.” In the late summer of 1963 King wrote his unforgettable letter, “A Letter From Birmingham Jail” responding to the criticism from eight prominent white clergy man. They say the letter was smuggled out on ragged toilet paper by King’s lawyer. The letter exemplifies King’s negative feelings towards the unjust events taking place in Birmingham during the 1960’s. The letter is sought out to appeal to various audiences.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” “defends the use of non-violent protest to fight racism, and based upon Christian beliefs and natural law, he explains why people have a moral responsibility to break unjust laws” (viii). This text relates to the CIT claim, “The dignity of every human being is inviolable and the commitment to justice for the common good is necessary.” “All human beings- regardless of their race, gender, religion, class, ethnicity, or sexual orientation- have innate dignity and it is our responsibility to respect that dignity, in ourselves and in others” (ix). The reason for Dr. King’s presence in Birmingham was because injustice was there.
Where does right and wrong come from? Is it created or natural? If it’s created, who determines it and if it’s natural what’s the source? Maybe nobody truly knows or maybe it is impossible to know, but we can attempt to get close to what is moral. In a sense, there is only, really, two main sources that we could say “good” and “bad” originate from, it’s either made from government or religion, or it’s something that we grow up with and know naturally.
He writes this letter to defend his organization and peaceful protesting, yet also identifies the racial injustices he, and many other citizens received. King’s writing was very effective in accomplishing his goal to get his point across that segregation is a very serious thing. King hopes that his powerful and emotional message in his letter will impact how the clergymen, the whites, and many others approach and take action towards segregation. He hopes that they will see how terrible inequality truly is and make the American Society have less hate and more
The civil rights movement and coinciding events were revealed as a monumental declaration for certain groups of people. For other groups of people, it served as a reminder of the misdirection that the United States of America had been taking in terms of moving forward. Together, they compile into a collection of political, social, and moral reactions of various populations towards the civil rights movement and towards African Americans. Specifically, these were positive and negative reactions that were perceived towards Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, the “I Have a Dream” speech, and the civil rights campaign which had originated in Birmingham, Alabama. People were led to believe different things about these events
