The American people truly idolize Martin Luther King Jr. Roads, boulevards, highways, schools, churches, and college dormitories; are all named after him. He even has his own holiday to commemorate his birth, however, behind the icon it’s just plain Martin Luther King Jr, who risked his life for the equality of his people. Having a loving family and a Morehouse family, he grew into the man we now know as the world renowned Martin Luther King Jr. Dr King grew up in a middle class household where his parents stressed the importance of having an education. King was faced with a lot personal issues, but later overcame them with being engaged with school activities. Dr. King suffered from a great demand of depression throughout his adolescents years, mostly because of what happened to his grandmother. At the age of thirteen Dr. King denied the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Sunday school. From this point on he started to doubt what God can do for him. Furthermore, He attended Booker T. Washington where he became known for his public speaking abilities. There he joined the schools debate team, and was the quarterback of the football team. As well as he became the youngest person to be an assistant manager of a newspaper delivery station for the Atlanta Journal in 1942. Because of Dr. King scoring such a high score on the college examination of his junior year in high school, he was able to skip the ninth and twelfth grade. Benjamin Mays was king’s most influential mentors, which helped motivate him spiritually and academically. He was the president of Morehouse College as well as a preacher and theologian at the schools chapel. Mays wanted to turn the young men at Morehouse College into layers and doctors creating men not boys. King was astonished by this man, he saw in him what he wanted to be as a minster, a man who was socially involved and logical. He had a huge impact on king’s life, Mays caused him to see his real purpose in life. Dr. King saw in Mays how a real ministry should act like, including being the voice on social ideas.
