John C. Maxwell once said, “[A] leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a minister and social activist that led the civil right movement for about 13 years. As a child, he went through events that children should not have to experience, like seeing his grandmother die and losing friends because he was African American. He began college at the age of 15 and received his PhD at the age of 26. Overtime, he became a powerful person who would change the world forever. Throughout his life, King went through a large amount of struggle and heartache, but he never gave up. He never gave up on his dream of everyone being equal and being surrounded by peace and love. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase” (Parade). This statement shows he believed in taking risks. In 1963, King was arrested for protesting in Birmingham, Alabama. He wrote a letter while in Birmingham jail. It stated “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed” (Goodreads). This expression shows that Dr. King believed that any person could work hard to get what she wants and not be afraid to demand it. He was arrested 30 times between 1995 and 1965, but he never lost sight of his goal was and accomplishing it. On October 14, 1964, at the age of 35, Dr. King became the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. This statement “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream” (Deseretnews) shows that Dr. King’s largest goal was peace and equality for everyone and never gave up on his
