He died in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 39 in 1968 because of a gunshot. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man. Growing Up Martin Luther King Jr. was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, with the laws of segregation, which means that black skin toned people can’t do anything or go to the same places as white skin toned people. Martin Luther King Jr. would think of how the world would be if the equal rights laws got passed. When in high school, he graduated at the age of 15 years old. He also got the honor of president John F. Kennedy himself. Speeches and Protests Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of peace and not violence. He would deliver speeches and have non-violent protests. Did you know that he delivered 2,500 speeches, wrote five books, and dozens of articles. One of his most famous speeches was his “I have a dream speech” which passed the equal rights laws. He gave one in Memphis, Tennessee, called “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” speech, which was his last. He even traveled over 6 million miles to deliver speeches. Suffering and Memorial Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of peace, but other people didn’t think that. He got stabbed in the chest, was jailed 20 times, his house was bombed, got many personal attacks, and shot in the chest which was his death. He got shot in Memphis, Tennessee, in his third floor apartment. His statue was 30 feet tall, and put in Washington, D.C. His memorial cost 100 million dollars. They had to have a concert to raise the money for the memorial. They had Aretha Franklin, blindman Stevie Wonder, and even Garth Brooks. They raised the money but it took over three years to build.
