Martin Luther King Stood Tall

198 Words1 Pages
The diction in “Standing Tall” reveal that the speaker speaks in a reverent tone towards Martin Luther King. The speaker’s diction portrays reverence by describing King in an elevated manner. They use King and Rosa in the same poem. Rosa Parks was an icon to African Americans because she stood up for herself in a time where being black was essentially looked down upon, they say “King stood strong”. The speaker says that King “…stood proud, stood tall”. These words are positive and put King on a pedal stool. They say that “He stood there smiling, spreading love, until it rolled like a see across the land, sweeping away Jim Crow”. This elevates this mortal man and makes him out to be more than human, as if he’d given everyone their rights, single-handedly.
