Dissecting the Dream The “I Have A Dream” speech was given on August 28, 1963 in Washington, D. C. by Martin Luther King Jr. He gave this speech as part of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This speech was given over 50 years ago, but Martin Luther King Jr.’s encouraging and empowering words still have a powerful effect on the American people of today. African Americans are still fighting today for equality with groups like “Black Lives Matter.” The purpose of this speech was to instill faith into the audience, the majority of the audience being blacks living in America. This era, when the speech was given, was a time of fighting for civil rights. African Americans of this time dealt with very tough times, but continued to fight for their equality and rights as Americans. The fight for racial equality began in the 50s, and continued on well into the 60s. Although some people didn't agree with King’s points, he still made a powerful speech. Some people believed that fighting physically was the way to go to get what they wanted. King believed that they had to fight peacefully. King displays logos by quoting from our creed, “that all men are created equal.” This is a fact, but he says this because it isn't exactly true.
