I Still Have a Dream If Martin Luther King was still alive today, he would be disappointed by the current conditions for African American people. In Dr. King’s “I have a Dream” speech, he says, “100 years later, the Negro is still not free.” Fifty years after this speech was written, and African American people are still not free. Yes, they do have the ability to vote. Yes, African Americans can get an education. However, they are segregated in different ways than they were almost 50 years ago. Dr. King took an exceptional stance, simply wanting everyone to be free, regardless of color, religion, and so forth. He repeatedly emphasizes a fighting spirit and tells people to go forward fighting for their rights, until they get what they deserve. However, he proposes a peaceful battle, saying, “let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.” He is not blaming white people for what they have done, which he easily and fairly could do, but simply wants peace and community amongst everyone. Dr. Luther simply wants to put an end to racial justice, a battle that is still going on today. In his speech, he calls the people to rise and take a stand. African American people are segregated in many different ways in today’s modern society, nearly 50 years after Dr. King delivered his speech.
