Martin Luther was a German priest who sparked the Protestant Reformation. Luther knew that salvation could only be achieved by faith alone and was against the sale of indulgences. He realized that the church was corrupt and that indulgences were only a means of creating wealth for the papacy. Luther wrote and published The 95 Theses, challenging the the Church on the notion of penance and highlighting his distress on the relationship between the Catholic Church and the common people. Such as in his The 95 Theses, one of Luther’s theses proclaims, “The ‘treasures of the Church,’ out of which the pope, grants indulgences, are not sufficiently named or known among the people of Christ.”.
