Thomas Bradley, also known as “Tom”, was on December 29th, 1917 in a small country town in Texas named Calvert (“Tom Bradley,” 2015). Tom came from a slave background. He was the second oldest sibling of five (“Mayor Tom Bradley,” 2009). Bradley grew up wanting to be a police officer and lawyer before finding interest in entering the politics field (“Mayor Tom Bradley,” 2009). He is most known because he made history by becoming the first African American mayor of Los Angeles in 1973 (“Tom Bradley,” 2015).
The United States of America as they stand today are a result of the evolution of the frameworks our founding fathers set in to place long ago. Among them were the Articles of Confederation, the Virginia and New Jersey plans, the Federalist Papers, and the Constitution. Beginning with the original frame work for the government of the United States, the Articles of Confederation, established in 1781, formed a firm league of friendship among the states, instead of a government for the people (Dye, Gaddie 66). The United States fared well under the Articles of Confederation. With success in gaining independence from Great Britain, gaining France as an ally and establishing a viable peace.
The Chicago Defender was created by Robert C. Abbot in 1905 and the newspaper itself played a very pivotal role to the Black Experience in the United States. During much of the mid -1900s the African American experience was not great. Although African Americans were free down South, they treated African Americans as if they were barely a person. Passed by Congress the year before, the amendment says, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” Although the amendment was passed in the late 1870s, many racist practices were used to oppose African-Americans from voting, especially in the Southern States like Georgia and Alabama.
