Cleveland might gain its fourth skyscraper in the upcoming year. The nuCLEus project is a proposed 54-story (650 foot) complex that will be located in downtown Cleveland. It will be Cleveland’s fourth tallest building. The complex will be used for office, entertainment, residential, retail, and hotel purposes. The project won unanimous approval from the Cleveland Planning Commission last November. The structure has been nicknamed The Jenga Tower for its resemblance to the game. There has yet to be a date released for the building’s opening, but construction is ongoing.
Robert L. Stark president and CEO of Stark Enterprises is the lead developer on the project. Stark is most famous for the development of Crocker Park in Westlake, Ohio and the construction of the Eaton Corporation building. It will be within walking distance of the Quicken Loans Arena, Progressive Field and The Cleveland Convention Center. The project is estimated to cost $380 million to $400 million. The entire nuCLEus project could include 500 residences, 1,600 parking spaces, 200,000 square feet of offices, 140,000 square feet of retail space, and a 150-room hotel.
Cuyahoga County has devoted $3 million in casino-tax revenues as a loan to start the first phase of the project. The project is also being financed by firms and companies who have already purchased their space in the complex. One of the firms is the 77-year-old law firm, Benesch. Benesch law firm has recently come to an agreement with Stark Enterprises to occupy roughly 66,500 square feet of the new building. Stark Enterprises is funding most of the project.
