As one of the classic television shows of all time, Gilligan’s Island will forever ask the question, “Mary Ann or Ginger?” Mary Ann Summers, the down-to-Earth farm girl from Kansas, and Ginger Grant, the show-stopping movie star from Hollywood, were two of seven people who became stranded on an uncharted island after embarking on a three hour tour. Even though they were meant to be foils, there are natural parallels that they have. Whenever an argument breaks out that divides the entire island, Mary Ann and Ginger are consistently on opposite sides considering that they act equivalent to that of sisters. However, that does not mean they are not alike; instead, they both want the same solution, but they have conflicting ideas of how to achieve them. Nevertheless, when they are not arguing, Mary Ann and Ginger are always right next to each other. The girls are close to the same age, so it makes it easier to relate to each other than it would be with anyone else on the island. They value all of the islanders equally, and the girls know that everyone has to stick together if they want to survive island life. If one digs deeper into the personalities of Mary Ann Summers and Ginger Grant, it is their similarities that stick out further than the differences. While Mary Ann is everlastingly merry and upbeat, and Ginger always acts as the temptress of the island, they both took a 3-hour tour to ease off, and to enjoy Hawaii's scenery.
