Mary Lennox, a ten year old girl, was an orphan moving from India to England to live with her wealthy uncle whom she had never met. With no parents, she moved, and was not happy about it. She was not used to doing her own things without any help since back in India, her Ayah (nanny/babysitter), took care and did everything for her. Therefore, Mary was selfish and very spoiled. When Mary arrived in England, Mrs. Medlock, the housekeeper in her new house greeted her. Unlike Mary’s Ayah, Mrs. Medlock had no intention of giving Mary whatever she wanted. Mary would frown, and make angry noises but Mrs. Medlock didn’t pay any attention to them. Mrs. Medlock began to tell Mary about her father and his wife. “Your uncle’s a fairly young man who was born with a crooked back. He always brooded about his back and hated his life and his home until he got married. Mrs. Craven was a pretty young thing who truly loved him... He was so much in love with her that he’d given her anything in the world she wanted. Then she died.” (Pages 13-14.) Once she walked in the door to her new huge house, she found out her uncle didn’t wish to see her and she could only go into her rooms, and she may never wander around or explore. He told her about what he does, all about the flowers and vegetables he grows, and he told her about the birds. They realize they are both are usually sad and lonely and they both have no friends, so they become friends.
Meanwhile, night after night Mary heard a whining sound and was determined to find out what it was. Even though she wasn’t supposed to go wandering around her house, she found that the noise she was hearing, was her cousin Collin who was crying because he was lonely. Mary made Collin feel good and and warm and in return he loved her. Mary would get mad when Collin would always say how he was going to die from having a hunchback like his father. Collin had never stood up because he was afraid that something bad would happen if he did. Mary and Collin were friends, with ups and downs.
