1. The History of Mary Prince was a slave narrative by a female slave. In it, Mary Prince talks about the different masters she had throughout her life, and she also talked about how certain masters treated her and the other slaves living on these plantations with her. The first master Mary Prince belonged to was Captain Williams. Prince narrates about how she was treated kindly by her owner, Miss Betsey, and the wife of Captain Williams. Prince wrote, “My master, however, was a very harsh selfish man; and we always dreaded when he returned from sea” (page 7). This sentence shows that the women who had slaves while their husbands were away were often kind towards slaves. Prince goes on to talk about how horrendous it was to hear Hetty being whipped by the master late at night for not completing a task. Hetty then taught Prince everything there was to know about working for Captain I, and made sure Prince did each task precisely. Prince states that the two young boys in the household were beat on a daily basis, often without doing anything wrong. Mary Prince stated, “Both my master and mistress seemed to think they had a right to ill-use them at their pleasure; and very often accompanied their commands with blows, whether the children had been behaving well of ill” (page 15).
