Newspapers and books were made, talking about the disappearance and death of Mary Rogers. One of the most popular book written about Mary was called “The Mystery of Marie Roget” by Edgar Allan Poe with the help of Auguste Dupin. It took a lot of trials and errors, but it was never figured out to how Mary had died. Through investigations and interrogations, it was concluded that Mary had purposely misinformed her fiance, Daniel Payne that she would be visiting her aunt on a Sunday morning of July 25 (Edgar Allan Poe). In addition, Rogers disappearance raised more suspicion when her mother found a suicide note on Mary’s room table on October 6, 1838 (Edgar Allan Poe). In fact, Joseph Morse, an engraver, was seen having a heated conversation with a woman fitting Roger’s description (Beautiful Cigar Girl). Surprisingly, on July 28, 1841, the body of Rogers was found along the shore of New Jersey, near Hoboken (Edgar Allan Poe). Stashower, a coroner, illustrated that a gang was no affiliated with the death of Rogers, but rather an individual had committed it. Frederica Loss, a tavern owner, stated that, “Mary came in the tavern with a young man with dark complexion” (Edgar Allan Poe). The day Mary disappeared, it raised suspicion, but there was a possibility that she was up to something. In fact, when Fredrica Loss was accidentally shot by one of her sons, she confessed on her deathbed, “Mary’s death was the result of a botched abortion” (Marie Roget 1821). Confirming that statement, Stashower, a detective, claims that while allowing for the possibility of an abortion, Mary had been having an affair (Edgar Allan Poe). In addition, it was concluded that Mary came in the tavern with a young doctor to have an abortion performed. Little did the present know that future had planned something else for Mary and that her abortion would fail (Fredrica Loss). On the contrary, Daniel Payne was believed to be the killer, because had possibly broken off their engagement after the abortion, thus resulting in Payne murdering Rogers (Beautiful Cigar Girl).
