Deyanna Bailey English 12 Mrs. Batson 24 March 2017 Mary Shelley : Frankenstein Throughout the 19th century, our views on literature have drastically changed. Many important figures around the Romantic era invented concepts that we still establish to this very day. Mary Shelley is one of those influential individuals of that time. Shelley’s deep and philosophical ideas to capture the literature skills, became the best written in English, popular culture, and film. Mary Shelley is mostly known for Frankenstein (The Modern Prometheus), a science fiction novel, that is about what happens when a man tries to play God and recreate something that ends up having life changing consequences. In “Frankenstein”, Victor, a mad scientist, becomes obsessed with the idea of creating life. After making the monster, he falls into a depression because he feels bad that he created something so “hideous and gigantic creature” he felt bad for himself and the monster. Victor spends most of the story trying to deal with the consequences of his actions as well as the monster’s. By the end of the story, the monster has been taunted, rejected, and afraid of his creator and society. It pushes the monster to commit the murder against his creator’s family (66). Victor now wants revenge and chases the monster through Europe and Russia. Victor nearly catches the monster near the Arctic Circle when Robert Walton discovers him. Victor, now near death, is taken aboard Walton's ship to recover from exhaustion and exposure.The story ends with the monster appearing out of the mists and ice to visit his foe one last time. The monster enters the cabin of the ship and tells Walton his side of the story. Victor dies, and the monster tells Walton that he will burn his own funeral pyre. The monster then disappears in the waves and darkness, never to be seen again. (Nardo
