The Crucible: Mary Warren In the play, The Crucible, Arthur Miller’s has his characters encounter multiple conflicts. Those conflicts are both internal and external. One character in for sure is, Mary Warren, she struggles with self-assurance which means not having a lot of confident in herself. She is either a protagonist or an antagonist. Mary Warren’s character represents the confusion and anxiety caused by fear. Her fear of others is illustrated to be her downfall throughout the play. Also, her fear is the reason why she keeps quiet for so long in the play. So she acts naive a lot, Mary Warren is constantly changing her stability, morals, and motives throughout this play. The author Miller shows her as outcast which explains the need for Mary to be dependent on others all the time. Mary says, “What’s got her? Abby she is going to die! It’s a sin to conjure, and we-” then Abigail says “I say shut it, Mary warren!” (Miller 461) all this shows how Mary let Abigail rule her. Mary lost her sharp edge and pompous attitude. There are times in the play were Mary gets put down by others and cant fully be herself at times because sometimes she accepts that, and I sure know I wouldn’t except that! But everyone’s different and obviously Mary was raised different. It is for sure obvious that Mary’s life goals and personality has definitely changed. While reading this play I remember very clearly this moment. When they were in court the bossy Abigail told Mary to make a poppet to give to proctor and of course Mary listens and immediately and does it. Mary didn’t have to do anything Abby says but Mary went back to her old self and listens to people when they tell her what to do. For the rest of the play after the whole court scene Mary joins Abigail and the girls and follows them and listens to what they
