Mascot Controversy The concept of mascots was formed in ancient Roman gladiator fights. A school's mascot or logo should not be discriminatory against any person or group of people, for the reason that associating people with stereotypes is discriminatory towards people. School or sports mascots bring stereotypes to audiences, which put forward organizations' motives of making everyone equal in the world today and eliminating stereotypes. But, it is also raising conflict within the world to remove certain mascots because it supports prejudged and stereotypical beliefs. People also think that mascots and logos are just there for sports attire, when they are much more than that for many people. The Washingtonian stated, ”In 2016, the Washington Post published a poll about whether Native Americans found the Washington Redskins’ name offensive. Ninety percent of respondents said they were not offended by the team name.”(“A New Study Contradicts…”) Moreover, having a small majority of society take a survey on discriminatory and stereotypical mascots can help provide evidence for people that do believe that mascots are of importance to society that mascots should not change and should stay the same. Having a small part of society take a survey that is portrayed as simple does not show just how much this issue needs to transition all around the world and become an issue of importance. In contrast, prejudged mascots show much of society is still a place where people aren’t looked at as equal, they are still judged for being themselves. The Washingtonian commented that the survey The Washington Post gave out proved how discriminatory mascots were not of significance to today's society. Washingtonian believed the message because they thought just a small part of the population not caring about discriminatory mascots proved that mascots weren’t important to change and evolve. School and sports mascots are of importance to society. Mascots are the face of teams and schools and they should be viewed as something that provides pride and enjoyment, the mascots should not be something that has a harmful effect on people, cultures, religion and more. National organizations such as NCAI was a group that had brought the attention of many teams to the importance of mascots not being discriminatory or stereotypical. NCAI had a movement where they drove to make a change in sports teams to show the importance of all people being equal in many ways. Prejudged mascots
