Glee is one of the most popular television series on Fox, over the past five years, especially among the young viewers and some old. Glee's musical numbers, underdog characters, and rousing soundtracks have all helped make Glee a runaway pop-culture hit, its views have grown throughout its life due to it views on social themes and social issues. The Glee club is made up of students from “just about every race, religion, sexual orientation, and clique”. In this paper I am going explore and talk about the many views of masculinity that has changed in the show Glee and how it changes the traditional view of masculinity, by not putting it all into one single gender. He is apart of the Glee club. He also was one of the first openly gay character introduced in the series. In the beginning of the series Kurt is in the closet and tried to make everyone think he was straight, but he finally comes out to his best friend Mercades Jones, and then eventually comes out to his father Burt Hummel. In the beginning of the series Kurt try’s to fit in to the traditional view of masculinity or a man he wears flannel and listens to country music in an attempt to be or at least to appear to look to be straight, he is unable to overcome his supposed inner truth. It puts a lot of stress on Kurt because he was afraid to show the real him. Kurt also tried to prove that he was masculine by joining the High School football team, and helps lead the team to their first win of the year. By doing so he showed the he is strong and intelligent as the other “masculine” guys but in his own way and nothing will make him less of a man. Both of the women have masculine jobs and or often mistreated and bullied and given the image of they are weird women who are not supposed to embrace masculinity because masculinity is for men only. The football coach on Glee for example, is named Shannon Beiste. Her last name is clearly meant to highlight her transgression of gender norms as a large woman with a low voice who works in a ‘masculine’ profession.(Wolfenden) She is bullied and is pushed to almost breaking. She also forced the football to retry out for the team because they were so disrespectful. A lot of teachers also bullied her because of how she looked. But over time the school and the teachers start to accept the two characters and they start to fit in and get accepted by the school kids. But it shows this following question: is masculinity a gender term? Is masculinity a predefined term? Are we masculine when we are born or do we choose to be?(Dyane) People who do not conform to these categories are generally stigmatized or forced to take sides. Sue Sylvester is the cheer coach and she is trying to force the Glee club to go away because they are taking the spot light away from the Cheerios the cheer team.
