This movie seems to be set in the medieval period, approximately in the 15th - 16th century, according to the costumes being worn by the characters. However, the majority of the costumes were not explicit to this era. In my opinion, some of the costumes resembled 13th century early middle ages pieces based on my visualization from the textbook. As I watched this movie, I focused on Princess Buttercup. I paid close attention to all the costumes worn by the character. I have noticed that the costume designer took some liberties in the design of the costume simple because some elements of the garments were not authentic to the specific period. According to our textbook, the medieval period costume was more form fitting whereas this movie had more of a loose fitting appeal to them. During the medieval period, sleeves were had a tight fitting which made the costume look how it may have during that time frame. The red robe that Princess Buttercup wore for the majority of the movie resembled a houppelande with bagpipe sleeves which was popular in the 15th century. During this period, unmarried women could reveal their hair. In some scenes, Princess Buttercup was seen wearing metal filets, especially when she was in the castle with Prince Humperdink. It resembled a surcote made out of rough wool. The seams looked like it was machine made because the stitches were straight and uniformed. The material was rough in texture, possibly to resemble wool that peasants may have worn. I did notice that the character had a few variation of costumes while she was being courted by Wesley “farm boy” during this time. In fact, I am almost sure peasants wore their costumes until they were unserviceable since they could not afford to buy clothes frequently and garments were not easily
