Even though it is used frequently, little is known about the optimal cooling methods for inducing and maintaining controlled normothermia and hypothermia in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In this study, the researchers compared the effectiveness of many available cooling devices for temperature management in ICU patients with different types of neurological injury. The researchers took 50 patients with an indication of controlled mild hypothermia a strict normothermia in the ICU. Then it was divided into five groups, making 10 patients each group, each group were then assigned in consecutive order to conventional cooling (an infusion of 30 ml/kg cold fluids, ice and/or cold packs), cooling with water circular blankets, air circulating blankets, water circulating gel-coated pads and an intravascular heat exchange system. After a certain target temperature was reached, the researchers measured the percentage of time the patient’s temperature was below 0.2°C or above the target range. It was concluded that the results of the study demonstrate that water-circulating blankets, gel-coated water circulating pads and intravascular cooling are equally efficient in inducing hypothermia and normothermia. For maintaining the target temperature, intravascular cooling is superior to all other cooling methods. Cooling with water-circulating blankets, gel-pads and intravascular …show more content…
Despite the fact that the stress us at its optimum level can produce positive action, excess stress can add to the development of physical ailments such as hypertension, ulcers, skin disorders, headaches, arteriosclerosis, and other life threatening diseases. Stress may be the single most important factor related to the increasing rate of suicide in the United States of America, and is considered responsible for many physical and physiological problems. This paper attempts to define anxiety, also known as stress and tension, and presents two models for coping with it. A review of music therapy and stress reduction research identifies problems in methodology and in the operational definitions of “relaxing” or “sedative” music; different techniques for measuring relaxation are also discussed.
