For example Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr. and Haley Schmutz all live by this quote. Gladwell specifically mentions the “10,000 Hour Rule” which states that anyone who wants to reach a definite level of mastery must perform 10,000 hours of practice. Some believe this rule to be invalid as those born talented, are also born successful. Though I recognize that some are born naturally gifted, I still contend that one who wants to become great at what they do, must do supplementary amounts of practicing as it utilizes one’s potential to the fullest as Gladwell argues.
How can lying and telling partial truths be more ethical than following the law? One of the final scenes in To Kill A Mockingbird reveals the death of Mr. Ewell after his attack on Jem and Scout. Atticus believes the written law show be directly adhered to, while Heck Tate believes morals take precedence over precise legal codes. The men have differences of opinion on who killed Mr. Ewell, and how they should respond. Each man views his cause as the most moral and most ethical.
This is a sign of Transcendentalism that Emerson could agree with because that's what he thought everyone should follow to be considered their own person. In his essay he writes, “Accept the place the divine providence has found for you, the society of your own contemporaries the connection of events. ”(line 8). Emerson believes that you should follow the present and not look back, because if you trust yourself, you can accomplish what you set out to do. For instance in chapter six when McCandless writes a letter to Ron he tells him what can damage an “adventurous spirit”.
Elie Wiesel’s somber speech, “The Perils of Indifference”, demonstrated the harsh reality of the numerous evils harvesting in the world. The main evil though was simply indifference, or a lack of concern. As a young Jewish boy, he faced the wickedness of the Holocaust, imprisoned at Buchenwald and Auschwitz and also losing both his parents and younger sister. This essay, Self-Reliance, is very insightful for its time, and many of the themes written are still relevant today. These allusions used here were put together to further explain his main point on trusting one’s genius. This ignites people to become brave, and trust themselves more, rather than being afraid of their own thoughts and mind. After reading, people may even embrace their thoughts and run with their genius. Emerson again backs up his original statement, but instead uses analogy to express how society rejects individuality, but you must be brave enough to be your own part of this group.
