When Schmitt moved into the building Schmitt wanted to show her appreciation by making brownies. When Schmitt found out that “Grandpa had died she wanted to get sympathy flowers. Little did Schmitt realize, in China when someone passes away white flowers are associated with death ( Schmitt 109). After the funeral when “ Grandpa” was being cremated the family paid extra so that “ Grandpa” could have a private burning without getting the wrong ashes of a stranger. Laurie Halse Anderson’s historical fiction novel, Fever 1793 takes place in colonial Philadelphia, during the time of the yellow fever outbreak. Mattie Cook, a young girl during the outbreak has to cope with the many hardships brought onto her by the disease. While the fever brought many terrible things to Mattie and her family, she is able to move past them and build her life up again. By using character development and figurative language, Anderson is able to create the theme that good things can always come out of something bad. The theme that prevails throughout the novel Fever 1793 is that good things can always come out of something bad.

Fever 1793 was written by Laurie Halse Anderson. Matilda (the daughter of Ms. Cook) and her family endured many hardships during the yellow fever epidemic. During the epidemic, many people died and moved out of city because of how dangerous it was at the time. Some hardships that Mattie and her family encountered were: losing her grandfather, being separated from her mother, and being judged for opening the coffeehouse. These three reasons show that Matilda and her family endured many hardships.

At the beginning of the story, the author describes how Granddaddy is very patient when it comes to Granny Cora, his wife. Granny is a control freak who does not like when people touch her things, so when the cameramen show up, she is very suspicious. After a long day of hunting, Granddaddy returns home and right away, Granny tells him to tell the cameramen to get out of her flower bed. At the very end of the story, after Granddaddy smashes the camera, he says, “‘You standin in the misses’ flower bed,’ say Granddaddy. ‘ This is our own place’”

“The Ruined Maid” by Thomas Hardy is a satirical poem which uses closed form and anapestic lines to emphasize the importance of complying with society’s ideals while the tone and meaning oppose conforming to society. The closed form and anapestic lines within “The Ruined Maid” follow the guidelines of their forms closely, creating a feeling of submission to rules. Hardy uses a rhyme scheme of AABB, from which he never falters. This relates to how one might behave if they follow all of the society 's ideals; never veering from the given standards.
