In the movie Matilda, the main character is a young girl who loves to read, and learn and is very smart for her age. She is brilliant and has a natural curiosity about the world around her. By age four, Matilda learns how to read using newspapers and magazines found around the house. Matilda is also very kind and empathetic, often standing up for those that are mistreated. She uses her intelligence to stand up against her cruel parents and the mean headmistress of her school. She is unafraid to speak up and fight for what is right even if that means going against powerful people. She first demonstrates her bravery when she stops the men from attacking Atticus. As Tom Robinson is accused of raping 19-year-old Mayella Ewell and sent to jail. Most times white mobs would show up at the jail and kill the guilty person. In this case, a similar thing happened. Mr.Cunningham and a bunch of other men show up wanting to lynch Tom. Atticus is already waiting at the jail for something like this to happen, but he soon finds himself in big trouble as the men are surrounding him. The kids, having followed Atticus, show up at the scene. Despite seeing all of the men there Scout did not feel intimidated to go into the middle of the circle and start talking to Mr. Cunningham about Walter. After their attempt at Lyniching Tom fails Mr. Cunningham says, “Let’s clear out,” he called. “Let’s get going boys'' (206). Scout’s innocence and bravery manage to make the men leave. Despite feeling intimidated by all of the looks she received from the men, she still found the courage to talk to Mr. Cunnignahm. In the end, her bravery and ability to stand up to the men unintentionally save the lives of Atticus and Tom Robinson. In addition, Scout also expresses her bravery when she fights Cecil Jacobs. Everyone learns that Atticus is appointed as a lawyer for Tom Robinson’s case and the people of Maycomb are not happy about it. There is a lot of discrimination in the community towards African Americans. Scout is still growing up and trying to understand the people around her. While she is at school Cecil Jacob uses a racial slur to announce that her father defends black people. Scout turns around and is ready to fight: “My fists were clenched and I was ready to let fly”(99). Scout is very fearless when it comes to protecting the people that she loves.
