Introduction Henry Matisse's Le bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) and Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon are regarded as great artworks of modern art. Two are inspired by postimpressionism and also broken old style that is represented by Cezanne. In this essay, I would like to argue how two are inspired by Cezanne art piece and how distinguished they are. Paul Cezanne's The Large Bathers Cézanne got rid of the traditional presentation of paintings that is focus on the space and colors. And he intentionally pursued firm format than changing colors. He also simplified all natural things to express with the circle, cylinder or cone. We say this kind of artists "Post-Impressionists." Matisse was inspired by post-Impressionism. Like Cézanne, Matisse depicted the landscape with similar functions. And like Cézanne, Matisse unifies the figures and the landscape. Matisse also referenced Ingres's odalisques and harem fantasies, and Titian's Bacchanal of the Andrians. Matisse reused and played at mythic paradise. It is an evidence of inspiring by Post-Impressionism. However, Matisse broke the ancient rule, interest in myth. He thought it could be possible to express his emotion with colors, especially expressive, bright, clear colors, and wildly sensual forms. Matisse's painting understood Cézanne's challenge and did beyond it. Unlike the paintings by Cézanne's The Large Bathers, he didn't describe forms that recede in the background and diminish in scale. But the landscape is different breaking style. This is an exorcism painting. He created it with multifigure composition than the domain of the single figure. That was represented by emotional and intellectual control. Conclusion Matisse and Picasso's painting not only were not inspired by the Cezanne's The Large Bathers but also broke the old rule through their distinctive form and style.
