Firstly, Matt’s life seems to only have light when he is with the people he loves because they are the only ones that leave him anything to hold onto throughout his predicaments. Even when he is kept from the people who are loyal to him, just the mere thought of them can bring him hope, and lift his spirits. After Matt has been under Rosa’s care for quite a while, transitioning from a room with a cot, to the cold, hard floor, to sawdust, he has to battle against the insipidity that threatens to engulf him. Rosa has been cruel and malicious in being responsible for Matt, going to great lengths to make sure that he is suffering. Finally, the day comes when Celia rescues Matt from the horrible, drab prison that he has been kept in by Rosa. Matt is sitting in his corner waiting for Rosa to come punish him, when something shocking and unbelievable happens first, “¡Mijo!¡Mi hijo!” cried Celia from the window. “My son! My child! I didn’t know you were here. Oh, God! They told me you were with El Patrón. I didn’t know,” (Farmer 47). Her reaction exemplifies her loyalty towards Matt, and when Famer writes “My son! My child!” the reader is able to see everything she feels for him. An obstacle was put in their relationship when Matt was taken by Rosa, but Celia has been yearning and worrying about him for all the time he was missing, never dreaming she would lose him. Never imagining that the Alacráns, the family who lives at the Big House, would hurt him. When Matt is without people who do not care for him or love him, he is being mistreated. As a clone, Matt’s position is one of the lowest, even below pets. This rank only brings him pain.
