The children were having so much fun playing in the yard after dinner. Mattie, Willie and Mama Mouse were watching from the edge of the garden. Mama Mouse warned the younger mice not to get too close because it was not safe yet. Soon the children would go in for the evening and the mice could explore.
An empty bag of cookies was left on the ground nearby and the little mice just had to see if there were any goodies inside.
The mother called for the children to come in and get ready for bed. The mice waited patiently for the children to leave. It was so hard to wait. She tried to stay out of sight and thought going back to the kitchen seemed like a good idea. Once in the kitchen, Mattie past two bowls that were on the floor. There were pictures of mice and fish on the bowls. A morsel of food was on the floor and Mattie decided to take a taste. There were furry toys next to the bowls, toy mice. Mattie wondered if the toys belonged to a little mouse like her. It seemed like a peculiar place to leave toys though.
After some time, the parents went upstairs for the night and turned off all the lights. Soon, the dog followed them up too. Mattie continued to roam around the house. She wondered if her family was worried about her.
Mattie decided to look at the back door to see if that was open or if there was a tiny hole that she could fit through. On her way to the door, she found another treat to eat. Even though she wanted to get home to her family, this was becoming a fun adventure. Mattie was beginning to miss her family, but decided that she felt safe in the big house and that she would get home soon.
It was a long night, but Mattie found more nibbles to eat and a few places to hide while waiting for morning. Just like her Mama had told her, there was a whole room filled with food. What a fun place to visit. She couldn't wait to tell her family about what she
