Savannah Nolting Mrs. Love Hilliard Multicultural Literature and Film 30 September 2016 The difficult times a family might face Have you ever thought about how some people might see you different because of your race, or traditions?. In the film titled What’s Cooking by Gurinder Chadha, it focuses on four families which include the Seeing, Avila, Nguyen, and that Williams family that teaches us about forgiveness, tolerance, and moving on. The Avila family includes Javier (father) , Elizabeth (mother) , Gina (daughter) , and also Anthoney (son). The Seeing family includes Ruth (mother) , Herb (father) , Rachel (daughter) , Carla (girlfriend) , and Aunt Bea (aunt).
In the novel “Fever 1793” the main character Mattie Cook overcame many hardships. The first hardship Mattie experienced was when her mother contracted yellow fever. Mattie was forced to leave her mother as she was dying from yellow fever and had to get into a wagon with a family of strangers. Mattie overcame this hardship by believing that her mother was going to be okay and she was going to meet her and Grandfather at the Ludington’s farm.
Cole’s character profile Cole Matthews is a very troubled kid who tends to get into trouble, he blames everything that happens on anyone who isn't him. He always gets a "second chance," from his parents, thus he doesn't understand the concept of change. Cole is a cocky fifteen year-old who doesn't learn from his mistakes, and can't seem to notice that some things cannot have the blame placed on someone else, only him. When he ends up going to jail, AGAIN , after beating up a kid for ratting him out after he robbed a store. Once he reaches the island he has been sent to for a year he learns that his real weakness is being alone.
Mattie trusts Rooster because she’s been old that he is a man with true grit. This trait to Mattie means a person who has a lot of courage, which is something she needs someone with to go on the journey. This helps their journey because it helps them be able to navigate the plains unafraid and with precision. This also helps when they get into the middle of a gun fights with Lucky Ned Pepper’s posse. Rooster trait also helps the quest because it makes Mattie feel a lot more comfortable with capturing Chaney and not being harmed.
Not only did I find myself reading about an epidemic that I had never heard about, but it was interesting to see how much doctors and scientist had to do in order to find out what was going on. Today we still have to go through the same process to find where the sickness is coming but we also count with technology and various knowledge of known epidemics that can lead us to finding new ones. We also have endless resources that are available for those who are sick, so that they can get better. Regarding the ENTIRE book: 7. What was the main point of the book?
Miss Strangeworth Character Essay: 71 Year Old Spinster Pleasant Street seemed to be Miss Strangeworth’s play house because she thought she owned the place, at least Strangeworth thought so. Meanwhile on the inside she is evil and thinks she is at the top of the town’s hierarchy. In fact she has a god complex. Miss Adela Strangeworth, a character in the short story “A Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, is a 71 year old who is thought by the townsfolk as a sweet puny lady but she is nothing but that. Because of the way Miss Strangeworth is, all horrible actions must have a consequence and she finds out the truth of that statement when her vintage old self turns into the evil lady that no one has seen before, and she realizes that she wants more control than she has, basically a god complex.
Jeremy Fink has a big fear of change. This shows that he doesn’t really like to try new things and he is not really a risk taker. Jeremy, a 12 year old, has been living without his father for five years now and that has been tough on him. That is one of the reasons he doesn’t like change, because the biggest change he can remember is living without his father. Another example is Jeremy’s food choice.
Portfolio Reflections Item 3: Character Map The character I thought had a lot of significance in the novel, but was not a main character was Jordan Baker. Jordan Baker was Daisy’s friend who grew up with her. She is famous for golf and that is how the narrator, Nick, recognizes her.
The story takes place during 90’s in a small town called Endora. The town is very peaceful and nothing really happens that much. Gilbert’s family lives in a house with Arnie, Amy, Ellen, Mama and other important people to them like Mrs, Carver and Becky. Arnie has development disability, which no one wants to take care of him except Gilbert. Ellen who is fifteen years old who is always disguised and Amy who is always doing all the work is busy and lastly Mama who lost her husband is stressed.
Life was hard at the Cook’s Coffeehouse, there was little to no supplies left to cook with, and little to no food for ourselves. At one point we ran out of food so we had to close the coffeehouse which made it harder to live since we were no longer making any money. The word of fever spread through town quickly as there there were many deaths to an unknown miasma. There has been rumors spread all across town that Yellow Fever has come back, and they say it is coming from the refugees that are coming in from the colonies.
In the book “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, it’s about a little girl who is pressured by her mother to become something she doesn’t want to be. Jing- mei , the daughter, is forced to become a prodigy(child actress), by her mother, and she doesn’t want to be one. In the story, Jing- meis’ mother uses allusions such as Shirley Temple to push her into becoming a prodigy. Although at first Jing- mei is excited to become a prodigy, she later realizes its something she just doesn’t enjoy doing. Consequently, the uses of allusion in the story help Jing- mei discover to not be a prodigy and that what her mother wants for her is not always important.
Gabriella Montez’s primary stereotype is the “nerd.” The first time Gabriella is seen, she is reading a book. This is a common indication used throughout the film industry that leads viewers to make the assumption that the character in question is introverted and intelligent. When Gabriella transfers to a new school, it is made clear that she is in fact academically talented. She is referred to as a “freaky genius girl” and “an Einsteinette.”
Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds,” written in 1989, captures the relationship of a mother and daughter from China that has just relocated to America. So, in the beginning of the short story Tan expresses the mother’s beliefs of America by saying “my mother believed you could be anything you wanted in America” (Tan, Two Kinds, www.rtsd.org). then going into examples such as “You could open a restaurant. You could work for the government and get good retirement and of course, you can be a prodigy, too” (Tan, Two Kinds, www.rtsd.org).
Kierrah Edwards ENGL 201 9/20/15 Character Analysis: Emily Grierson The short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner depicts how seclusion can certainly impact one’s life. Throughout the story, Emily gives off this “insane” impression. However, after fully reading the story, the reader can fully understand why Emily was the way she was. After losing her job, she goes against her family’s request and gets the dangerous job of a bounty hunter. She gets assigned Joe Morelli, who was accused of murder and who happened to be a childhood enemy. Stephanie is very inexperienced and receives help from a professional bounty hunter, Ranger.
