Matt also known as Private Duffy is in a hospital located outside of Baghdad called the green zone due to his injury, he does not know what happened to him but ends up finding out. Throughout the book Matt learns what the army is really about, acts nicer then before, and his injury changes him. Matt or Duffy learns what the army is really about during and during and after his injury. One thing he learns is that being injured changes the way higher rankings see you. During Matts recocery he gets to go meet Lieutenant Brody. While he was meeting him Matt realized that the only reason he is there is because his injury “Normally a guy with this highranking would treat him me like I am invisible. But is you were injured, you were here.” (McCormick 98). The first proof of this happens when Matt is with Charlene. Matt is a nice guy but doesn’t really show it, but while talking to Charlene he shows it “ You’re . . . oh, jeez, Charlene, don’t make me say it. Okey. You’re nicer.” (McCormick 153). Showing that Matt really does care and is showing he can be nice. More proof of Matt being nice was again with Charlene after an explosion. The explosion injured Charlene and threw Matt to the ground, Matt could have just walked away but he went and hepled Charlene and brought her to safety. “ Matt knelt down, grabbed her hand, and started talking to her. “You’re okay.” he said. “You’re going to be fine.” (McCormick 179).
