Writing Exercise 1 There are many different countries in the world and likewise there are many different governments to match. Some notable example are the Mauryan government by King Ashoka, the Lacedaemonian Constitution of Sparta, and the Magna Carta government of Medieval England. Each government had its own set of benefits to certain people. The Government of Sparta favored a strong warrior class, whereas the Magna Carta was fair to the Baron Class and protected them from the King. Ashoka preached about respect and fairness to all, and was more about a peaceful coexistence with their neighbors. Each Government was different in their own way. The Spartan Government differs from the Magna Carta and Ashoka government through its imbalance of government. Women had a lack of laws to keep them in check, while the Spartan soldiers were the main focus of the society. The government was prone to corruption because the Ephors were poor and the Elders were successful soldiers who could influence the Ephors with bribery. Sparta tended to flounder in peacetime or when they lost a certain amount of their soldiers which were expensive to make and took a long time to train. The only form of democracy was through the Barons who could in turn restrict or overrule some of the King's decisions. Equality was present in the case where everyone was entitled to a court trial and freemen were to be judged by their peers to preserve justice. The Magna Carta was also hated by its Kings who rightfully saw it as a limit to their power, Ashoka and the Spartan King were less likely to hate their prospective governments as the systems were in effect before they came to rule, or in Ashoka's case was created by the King.
