In the book, Maus, by Artie Spiegelman, the character Artie is writing a biographical comic novel through the stories Artie’s father is telling him. Vladek is currently describing to Artie how Vladek has arranged for himself, his wife Anja, and her family to hide from Nazi soldiers under their kitchen in a bunker. In Maus, Artie demonstrates what he heard in his father, Vladek’s, stories and portrays the filthy and inhumane conditions of his parents while they were hiding in the underground bunker. Artie also portrays what Vladek is telling him his and Anja’s experience in the bunker about as being desperate and the worry on Vladek’s and Anja’s faces shows just how terrified the two mice really were during that time.
