Max Vandenburg impacted Liesel Meminger the most during her childhood because they were able to relate their lives and they shared interests. This made Liesel like being around Max, and she wanted the best for him because she knew the hard situation he was in. They looked out for each other like no other two characters in the book.
Max’s background story was really hard. He lost his father as a child, he and his family were targeted by the Nazi’s because they are Jewish, and he has had to be cautious his whole life. He also left his family to hide, and got the Hubermanns help, putting them at risk, which left him with guilt. Liesel's background was also hard. She lost her father, brother, and her mother. Parents are very important and they did impact Liesel but they don’t take into account that kids and teenagers listen to friends more than they do parents. An example of this is when Liesel is constantly not listening to her mom because sometimes she didn’t treat Liesel the kindest. She also stopped relying on Hans so much when she told him she didn’t need him to comfort her at night after her nightmares. Liesel also formed a deeper relationship with Max then she did the Hubermanns. A quote from the end of the book states, “A man with swampy eyes, feathers of hair, and a clean-shaven face walked into the shop. He approached the counter. “Is there someone here by the name of Liesel Meminger?” “Yes, she’s in the back,” said Alex. He was hopeful, but he wanted to be sure. “May I ask who is calling on her?” Liesel came out. They hugged and cried and fell to the floor” (Zusak, 365). This quote is when Liesel and Max are grown up. Max survived the concentration camps and came back for Liesel, even after all that time. This demonstrates their strong relationship and how much they meant to each other. Liesel also looks out for Max when she is always looking for him in the crowds of Jewish people on the road.
