Marguerite, “Maya,” Angelou was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of three, Maya’s parents divorced, and she and her brother, Bailey, moved to Stamps, Arkansas to live with their grandmother. The family owned and operated a general store at which many people shopped. When Maya was seven, she and Bailey moved back to St. Louis to live with their biological mother. One year later, Maya was raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman.

As discussed in her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, seven-year old Maya was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. The man was consequently murdered by her uncles, and Maya, feeling responsible for his death, ceased talking and remained speechless for five years.

Maya and Bailey were sent from California to the segregated South to live with their grandmother, Momma. Her individual and cultural feelings of displacement, caused by these incidents of sexual abuse, are mediated through her love for literature.

In the story “I know why the caged bird sings” Maya Angelou makes a statement about the power of names to point out that name calling, and calling someone out of their name isn't always appropriate. When I was younger, I was always taught that calling an adult out their name was disrespectful. My parents weren't the kind that were strict about “yes ma’am” and “yes sir” but they always wanted us to call everybody by their first name. Nicknames aren't always bad, but there not always good either.
In 1978, Maya Angelou’s poem “Still I Rise” was published by Random House during one of the most productive periods in Angelou’s career. She wrote three autobiographies and published two other volumes of poetry up to that point. Even though it was her ancestor’s dream to have a life in society without fear of what might happen to them, or having equity and freedom she portrayed herself like a gift to them. Maya Angelou self-esteem and confidence allows her to rise over her battles, where her ancestors fell to slavery. “Still I Rise” describes her strength to always survive the battle against people criticisms, racism, and sexism from the white for herself, others living black and her black ancestors.
Life is a journey that is challenging for many people. As a result, many do not live up to their full potential. Nevertheless, there are always few distinguished people in every generation who master the art of living better than everyone else. Such individuals emerge as icons of the society and leave phenomenal legacies. Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, and Maya Angelou are outstanding souls who made their communities and the world a better place.
