Maya Angelou Poetry and art have received contributions from various members of ethnic groups. Many used it as a way to let others see into their soul as they laid bare their pain and culture. Maya Angelou was an American Black poet, who was born during segregation, and she witnessed discrimination and the inequalities that were running rampent through the African American communities. She is known for her poetry with its strong prose. Her famous "Still I Rise" refers to the centuries of oppression. She has become a voice in the darkness for many who were robbed of theirs. He spent many years living from home to home, and to cope with the pain of his mother's death, he turned to art, and was able to express his emotions in this way. (A&E Television Networks, LLC, 2015). In his painting titled "The Son of Man", he paints a self-portrait, but the face is hidden from the viewer. The clouds are gray, and in this context, shows depression and dreariness. There is a thought that individuals that gravitate to gray feel that they don't fit in to the rest of society. They may seem to lack emotion but are really attempting to protect themselves from the harsh world, and may be attempting to control their emotions. The young man is dressed as if there was an impending funeral. The navy suit is representative of an individual thinking profound thoughts. (Emily Gems, LLC, 2017). Maybe he has finally understood that he cannot hold onto the past, and he needs to move forward. He most likely covered his face with a green four leaf, apple, as a reminder that he must have a connection between the mind and soul for him to be reborn. (Color Psychology,
