Maya Angelou once said, “I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.”(Letter to My Daughter). Maya Angelou was born April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Montana. Maya Angelou is an incredibly inspiring writer. Sharing her life and experiences in her seven autobiographies, thousands if not millions of people were inspired by her. Not only was she an author, but Maya was also a poet, singer, dancer, actress, and playwright. The work Angelou created brought light upon the life of an African-American woman and the hardships she had to face living in America. She feared that hate would only come out of her mouth if she spoke. Maya and her brother were forced to move back to their grandmother’s house, since Angelou had refused to talk. At her grandmother’s house, Maya remained mute for several years before she was introduced to Mrs. Flowers. Mrs. Flowers taught Maya more about literature and the power words can have.
