Maya Angelou was an American, author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet and civil writes activist. Maya Angelou was born April 4th 1928 and she died May 28th 2014. She lived a great and successful life. Maya was best known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. The memoir made literary history as the first non-fiction best seller by an African-American woman. She even wrote a poem, ( On the Pulse of Morning) especially for and recited at Bill Clinton’s Presidential Inauguration in january of 1993. Angelou went on to win a grammy for the audio version of the poem. She also received many other honors throughout her career before her passing such as, two NAACP awards in 2005 and 2009, she got a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010, she won three grammys in 1994, 1996, and 2003, she also won a Gracie award in 2008 along with many many more awards. Maya first started writing on the late 1950’s when she joined the Harlem Writers Guild. She had a lot of help from friend and novelists James Baldwin when beginning her writing career.
