The Mayan calendar is one of the Mayan civilizations most impactful and memorable contributions to modern day societies. In modern times the Mayan calendar has been very impactful. In 2012, marked the end of the Mayan calendar. People in the Unites States made predictions and assumptions that the world was supposed to end. People were actually preparing for drastic measures to occur on the day of December 21st, 2012. This long lasting impact of the Mayan civilization has influenced the decisions of modern people around the world. The Mayan writing system has helped to preserve centuries of history in text. For example if a sentence used the word “I” they would draw a picture of an eyeball to represent it. The Mayan hieroglyphs created a very flexible language. Some hieroglyphs by themselves created words, but others created words with the use of several hieroglyphs put adjacent to each other. Mayan text was read much like English text. It is read from top to bottom and from left to right. Unlike the English language it is read in pairs of hieroglyphs. It was also rare to see Mayan hieroglyphs written in first person and plural construction. They were mostly written in the third person singular. The number one was symbolized using a dot; the number five was symbolized using a horizontal line; zero was written as a stylized shell. Using just these three symbols the Mayans were able to write odd numbers like nineteen and thirty-one and even numbers like two hundred four and six. To visualize these numbers, take the number nineteen. To write this number it would look like three horizontal lines (almost like an equal sign with an extra line), which would make fifteen.
