Mayella ACE In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella does not deserve the town's pity for many reasons. First off when on the stand, Mayella says, “My Paws never touched a hair o’my head in my life” (246). With this statement it’s proving the fact that she is lying to the court with proof of her and the background of her father's abuse, the fact of her lying is an offense. Along with that Mayella has been given many chances to call out her father for his wrongdoing. She needs to protect herself and Atticus has been asking her multiple questions to help her. “You seem sure enough that he choked you. All this time you were fighting back, remember? You kicked and hollard as loud as you could, Do you remember him beating you about that face?” - Atticus (page 247) This quote and statement show that Mayells is unsure what she allowed to tell Atiicus she can not think of an alibi as to how there marks on her face is Tom Robinson didn’t inflict the harm Atticus is well aware of Mayella is indeed lying and he asks this to question her false …show more content…
Mayella is making up what she's saying on the stand which is an offense. Mayella, later on, has an outburst when Atticus is confronting her on her lies by saying “That BLEEP yonder took advantage of me and you fine fancy gentleman don't wanna do nothing about it then your all yellow stinkin Cowards” (Mayella - 251) When looking at this Quote by Mayella again shes putting her aggression and lies to convict an innocent black man. Mayella is also inferring about her father and that they should not stand up for her because she is an adult who needs to stand
