Reading Response of The Understanding Comics The definition of comics as an art form created by McCloud, in Understanding Comics is really interesting. McCloud showed a triangle graph of the “Reality”, “The Picture Plane”, and “Meaning”. The art form of “Reality” and “The Picture Plane” is clear and easy to understand, however, the “Meaning” which only uses shapes to show the object is not easy to get. This idea of comics is an art form, which is totally new to me. The author -- McCloud used an interesting way to explain the icons of reality and the symbol. In comic, sample shells could have infinite combination, such as, two dots, a circle and a line can be a human face. If someone draws a lip on the face, it would represent a woman’s face, if there were a mustache on the face, it must be a man’s face. However, people cannot see the specific people in the comic, it is the reason of people is easy to see themselves in the comics. If there is specific person in picture, it is hard to image us in the story. To the contrary,when people into the world of cartoon, it is easy to see themselves. I haven’t thought about what am I think when I watching cartoon until I read this comic. The author point out “when you look at a photo or realistic drawing of a face, you see if as the face of another. But when you enter the world of the cartoon---you see yourself”(36). McCloud showed me a really amazing thought, which I do not realize before. Watching a cartoon is easier for people to become involved.
