John W. McCormack, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, was delivering this eulogy for the death of John F. Kennedy. On November 24th, 1963, McCormack’s eulogy speech was given in the Rotunda Dome in the U.S. Capitol. He extends his sympathy to Kennedy’s family and loved ones. The opening was memorable because millions of people throughout the world shared in the grief and felt as if they lost one of their own family members. McCormack discussed how President Kennedy was a devoted President to the people, that he was brave and willing to lead in a time of crisis, and that he would be among the great leaders of history. He also had great qualities with extensive vision of freedom and equality that have always been America’s political dream. McCormack provided examples to support his arguments that Kennedy was a great President, for instance, when the cold war was at its absolute extreme, Kennedy emerged ready to lead America. Metaphors were used to improve the understanding of the speech, such as, “At each great crisis in our history we have found a leader able to grasp the helm of state and guide the country through the troubles which beset it” (McCormack). The Presidents of the US have been able to lead America and get others to follow through times of crisis. McCormack’s speech was organized logically and easy to follow because he first talks about the past and then brings it back into the present day. He also bridged smoothly from one part of the presentation to the next, for example, by first discussing how Presidents from the past have helped America and then how Kennedy has helped and was ready to lead America. Therefore, we should grieve the loss of our great leader and thank God for the opportunities that we had with this great man as our President. I was convinced that even though President Kennedy has passed, God would bestow America with another great leader. Like many Presidents and great leaders in the past, President Kennedy will now take his place among the greatest leaders of history.
