How the Umayyads Brought together their lands In the Ummayads utilized many ways that were able to unify, and bring together the vast and distant Muslim empire. The first tactic the Umayyads utilized for bringing together the Muslim empire was declaring one universal language. That language was arab. On page 115 of the Mcdougal Littell World History: Medieval, and Modern Times it says, “At first language served as a barrier to unity in the empire. People in different parts of the empire spoke their own languages. Abd al - Malik who became caliph in 685, solved this problem. In the Mcdougal Littell World History: Medieval, and Modern Times history book on page 115 it states, “ Around 700, Abd al- Malik further unified the empire by introducing a common coinage. Coins were engraved with Arabic quotations from the Qur’an.” The effect of this change also further unified the muslim empire. Common coinage unified the muslims by unify the economy so the muslims didn’t have to barter with others, and these coins caused widespread success. Since there were also Arabic inscriptions from the Qur’an, these coins spread the religion of Islam, so these coins further united the empire under Islam. The last way the Umayyads were able to further unify the Muslim Empire was there appointed Emirs, these Emirs worked closely with the local leaders. On page 114 in the Mcdougal Littell World History: Medieval, and Modern Times history book it states, “To rule the different provinces of the empire, the Califs appointed Muslim governors called Emirs. These Emirs relied on local clan leaders to help them govern. When the Umayyads were working with the local leaders, the Umayyads were able to gain support from people because they saw their leaders working with the Umayyad leaders.
